Gothic Horror

Atmosphere

While writing a Gothic horror novel I think it is most important to have a effective atmosphere in which the story occurs. The setting of the story can help set the mood, influence how charterers behave, and so much more. The setting invokes an emotional response in reader, which is extremely important in a Gothic novel because the emotion that needs to be invoke is fear. Although action and supernatural are important in writing a Gothic novel, without the right atmosphere the story might not be able to emphasize the horror and mystery that the novel so desperately needs. If the setting in Frankenstein was not so graphic all the event will not have been so horrific as they were with the setting. The setting in Frankenstein leaves the reader feeling anxious and frightened.

A Ghost Story

Frankenstein

Mary Shelly's opening to Frankenstein contained four letters that Robert Walton had written to his sister during his voyage to the Arctic circle. From his letters we learn that he was traveling to  the Arctic Circle in search of magnetism, when he then encounters a strange man who is near to death on the ice. After the man entered the ship, Walton then goes on writing to his sister how strange yet intriguing the man is. Once the man is settled Walton tells his sister that everything he writes from then on will be of the strange man's words. All of the Chapters are in strangers perspective, who we later find out is Dr. Frankenstein. This is an  effective way to introduce the story, because it interests the reader without give away the excitement and mystery so early. It perfectly foreshadows what will later be the climax of the story.  If I were to write a ghost story I would begin with a excerpt of the climax, then work my way back to it again later. However, try not to give away what is going to happen. I would do this to interest the reader to keep on reading and wait for the except again, all the while the reader will attempt to guess the ending.

Spring Break

Please!!!

Spring break starts tomorrow and one can feel the excitement in the air. My fellow classmates and all the students at my school have been waiting for this day since winter break had came to a cease. I for one do not plan to have my spring break waste away like last nights dinner, no way, I am not going down that road. I refuse to limit myself to movies, food and sleep no matter how great it sounds. With that being said, my plans for this up coming week is to win softball games, get my tempts and make the most of the time. Over this next week I plan to win at least two of the five game scheduled for softball, which might be a little far fetched considering the weather and the fact that we suck as a team. Although I have not read the book yet, I feel as I am ready to take the test to see weather of not I am ready to get my tempts. The only thing keeping me from taking the test is my fear of driving. Hopefully I can get over my fear in a week and get'er'done, and have fun while I am at it.
